- Nowadays, the use of pencil has been matched by the importance of the keyboard, requiring students to learn script, and/or cursive handwriting, as well as typing. Even if the automation inherent in typed writing favours text production, little attention is paid to the development of transcription skills. This has motivated the development of a study comparing the performance of graphomotor and text writing skills of Grade 6 students (N= 84), in regards to the writing tool they use. Results of the writing tasks (alphabet task [1 min]; summary writing) show that typing allows for a more effective writing speed (compared to print and cursive), as well as for the production of long and detailed texts (cursive). These results suggest that the keyboard is an important tool that leads to positive writing performances.
